I chose to play this parade of crappy fantasy cliches for a generous 5 or so hours; but only because, as long as I kept the camera still long enough, the graphics were really pretty. There's also the fact that I have yet to play the previous Gothic games, so I had no hopes to be crushed. But no degree of ignorance could prepare me for THAT vocal performance; there are characters who sound passable, and some are racist stereotypes of fantasy creatures. Surely all this would be worth it if it's fun to play, right? Maybe it would be, but the persistently clunky controls, pathetically limited upgrade system, and complete lack of narrative choice leave everything to desire.

Friends, Arcania is an ok rpg, but maybe not 30 bucks worth. I had just as much fun with a 7 dollar game, called venetica, then I did with this 30 dollar game. You have to do quests when you get them, dont leave the area, because many times, they get blocked off behind you. No fast travel, accross a huge map. Well non like you think of. not skyrim fast travel. anywhere any time. You would expect a game release in 2013 to be better. Thank you.

I think most of the negative reviews of this game are a result of comparing it to Gothic which is fair considering it used that name for marketing. Compared to those classic games, yes, this is a huge step down. However, taken by itself it is a decent game if you happen to enjoy 3rd person action RPGs like me. I'd compare it closely with Venetica and somewhat similarly to Two Worlds and Divinity II. If you enjoy any of those games, I think you will at least be satisfied with Arcania.
