Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 245/40R18 97V XL on urheilullinen talvirengas, joka loistaa erityisesti kuivilla ja märillä teillä kylmissä olosuhteissa. Testit ja käyttäjät kehuvat toistuvasti vahvaa pitoa, lyhyitä jarrutusmatkoja ja tarkkaa ohjaustuntumaa, joten rengas sopii hyvin tehokkaille sedan- ja coupé‑autoille leutoihin ja keskikoviin talviin. Myös lumipito on yleensä hyvä ja käytös ennustettava. Urheilulliseksi talvirenkaaksi melutaso ja mukavuus ovat hyvät, vaikka jäykkä runko tekee ajosta hieman kovan tuntuisen. On kuitenkin tärkeää huomata, että jääpito on vain keskitasoa verrattuna pohjoismaisiin erikoistalvirenkaisiin, joten jatkuva ajo peilijäällä voi vaatia muun ratkaisun. Testeissä mainitaan myös, että sivuttaisessa vesiliirrossa ja syvässä loskassa rengas ei ole luokkansa paras. Osa kuljettajista kokee kuivakelin ajettavuuden hieman vähemmän terävänä kuin edeltäjässä Pilot Alpin 4:ssä. The tyres were used to drive from London to Lech in Austria in February when there was a lot of snow on the roads in the Alps. The Pilot Alpin 5 were on the front wheels of my car and 265/30 - 20 Pilot Alpin PA4 were on the rear axle. I would have preferred to have Pilot Alpin 5 on the rear axle but they are not available in this size.
