Nikon Nikkor Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR

I hesitated buying this lens. I wanted a lens to replace 2 lenses to bring on a family vacation because I wanted to travel light, and this lens delivered and then some!! The quality is amazing! Sure it isn’t fast but the technology is so good these days, that a high ISO on some pictures isn’t really a problem.Frankly one of the best purchases I have made this year.

Superzooms have always been viewed with a certain amount of disdain by “serious” photographers. Fairly or unfairly, lots of photographers would immediately dismiss anything more extreme than a 24-120mm lens. But now, Nikon has released not a superzoom, but a straight hyperzoom, whose wide end starts at 28mm and ends at 400mm: the Nikon Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR.

I got this lens in hopes of replacing my 24-120mm S and my 100-400mm VR S lens and my oversized camera pack to reduce the weight for a trip to Scotland. I love the overall versatility of the lens and the ease of use. shifting from the low to high range is great and fast. The photos for me are every bit as good as the other 2 lens. You just can not go wrong with this lens.

Purchased as a one lens travel kit along with a Nikon Z6ii. The photos speak for themselves and all the attached photos are at 400mm. If your an ordinary amateur photographer and not a pro or photo journalist who all seem to poo poo this lens or compare it to the Nikon Z 100-400, the performance is great at any focal length but only in GOOD LIGHT. It's not a good low light performer and I don't believe it was designed to be and it shouldn't be compared to the Nikon Z 100-400 either which is in a different design, build & performance class. Controls are minimal, lockswitch and control ring but I didn't feel I needed any. Its a lot heavier than the Nikon Z 24-200 but I found I quickly got used to it. I think it's worth every penny I paid for it!

I own quite a few Nikon Z Lens. I bought the 28-400 Z lens as I have a trip coming up with a severe flight weight requirement. I tested it out on my Z 8 and I have been absolutely amazed. It is off to a VERY GOOD START! I leave the 400 Prime on my Z 9 full time. I fort bought the 100-400 Z S lens as that is what was available then. The 400mm lens I bought to get sharper images and I had found I needed the 400 mm range a LOT! But after using the 28-400 on the Z 8 I will leave most of my gear at Home when I make the Trip to a Bush camp in Alaska where the last flight requires a very light weight, and it even requires I step on the scale too. I also am taking my 24-70 f 4 S lens as I do believe for video that is better than the 28-400 for video especially in the shorter zoom range.
