  Rullalautailu sai alkunsa Californiasta kun surffarit saivat ajatuksen siirtää surffailu vedestä kuivalle maalle. Rullalautailu on säilynyt suosittuna varsinkin nuorten keskuudessa. Lautojen tekniset ominaisuudet ovat kuitenkin ehineet muuttua paljon. Rullalauta katunimeltään skeittilauta koostuu laudasta eli dekistä, renkaista,laakereista ja trukista joka yhdistää renkaat lautaan. Rullalaudan valinta ei olekkaan aivan niin yksinkertaista kuin voisi kuvitella. Jo värin ja grafiitin valinta voi osoitautua hankalaksi, mutta lisäksi renkaiden koko ja kovuus, laudan muoto ja mitat,trukin koko sekä laakereiden valinta asettavat omat haasteensa. Jotta saisi rullalaudasta mahdollisimman paljon irti on hyvä jo lautaa ostaessa miettiä minkälaiseen käyttöön lauta tulee. Onko tärkeätä, että laudalla pystyy toteuttamaan vaikeimmatkin temput vai onko tarkoitus kruisailla kaupungin katuja. Kun käyttötarkoitus on selvillä voi siirtyä itse laudan valintaan.                                                                                  

                                                                                                                                                                                 
  Kevyeen menoon joustava dekki eli lauta on hyvä valinta. Teknisemmälle lautailijalle ovat jäykät dekit yleensä parempi vaihtoehto. Longboard eli mäkirullalauta on hieman normaali lautaa pitempi. Jos ei ole tarkoitus opetella temppuja on longboard myös hyvä vaihtoehto. Laudan leveys riippuu kengän koosta. Useimmat laudat ovat välillä 7,5"-8".   

  
  Trukin valinta kriteerinä kannattaa kiinnittää huomiota kääntymisominaisuuksiin. Kokoa valitessa tulisi huomioida laudan leveys, jotta trukki ei ole leveämpi kuin itse lauta. Korkeutta valitessa on hyvä huomioida renkaiden koko, jotta renkaat eivät ota kiini laudan pohjaan.  Painoissa ei ole suuria eroja, mutta toki kevyempi trukki on aina plussa.

                                                                                                                                                                                            

  Rullalaudan renkaita valitessa ei kannata kiinnittää huomiota ainoastaan ulkonäköön. Renkaiden kovuus vaihtelee yleensä asteikolla 90–100. Aloittelevan skeitttaajan suositellaan valisevan pehmeämmät renkaat, jolloin kaikki asfaltin epätasaisuudet eivät hidasta menoa. Renkaiden läpimitta ja leveys valitaan käyttötarkoituksen mukaan. Rampeilla skeitatessa isommat renkaat takaavat nopeamman vauhdin. Temppuja tehdessä pienemmät ja siten myös keveämmät renkaat  ovat hyvä valinta.

  Laakereita valitessa törmää ABEC luokitukseen.  Koodit  1, 3, 5, 7 ja 9 kertovat laakereiden kestävyydestä ja renkaan toimivuudesta.Mitä korkeampi  ABEC numero sitä vauhdikkaampi meno. Aloittelijalle sopivat laakerit ovat 5 tai 7.

  Varsinkin aloittelevan lautailijan on suositeltavaa kayttää kypärää sekö polvisuojuksia.
